Only 44% Of Customer Questions On Twitter Are Answered Within ...

Got a question about that phone you just bought? You might want to take the old-school approach and wade through option after option on the company?s customer service phone line if this new study is any indicator.

Of the customer service questions sent to the top 25 online retailers on Twitter, only 44 percent were answered within 24 hours, and only two companies are guaranteed to actually get back to you.

Despite the vast number of consumers taking to Twitter to complain, ask questions and otherwise discuss products, it?s pretty surprising that the top retailers aren?t better at answering their tweets.

STELLAService examined the top 25 online retailers to see how their customer service was on Twitter. They looked at their tweets over a 45 day period in order to determine how many of them actually responded to customers, and how long it took.

They found that a full 56 percent of customer tweets to companies were being ignored.

But despite the fact that less than half respond to customers the same day of the complaint or question, two retailers stood out as totally Twitter savvy: Zappos.com and LLBean.com.

Both of these companies responded to all customer service tweets they received within 24 hours. And Zappos.com went above and beyond, answering 82 percent of tweets within one hour of receiving them.

The other online retailers in the top 5 were Overstock.com (98 percent response rate within 24 hours), Dell.com (98 percent) and BestBuy.com (89 percent).

Citing a recent American Express Global Consumer Service Barometer, STELLAService CEO Jordy Leiser explains that Twitter customer care is essential to good business, as consumers who use social media for customer service are willing to spend 21 percent more with companies that impress them.

?It?s becoming clear that social media savvy consumers are an incredibly important segment of any company?s customer base, both because they have higher service expectations and they have wide broadcast networks for sharing their experiences with others. By failing to take Twitter seriously as a customer service channel, companies may be inadvertently ignoring some of their best customers at their own peril.?

As consumers, we expect that someone is listening when we tweet to a company?s username. And in this day and age, if a company doesn?t have someone behind the account at all times ? or at least checking in frequently ? it could cost them our business.

Flame virus: a cyberweapon or gamers' prank?

AFP - Getty Images

This undated screen grab released by the Kaspersky Lab site shows code from the computer virus known as Flame.

By Bob Sullivan

Why would super-secret spy software be written in a video game language?? As security researchers continue to unpack the digital mystery that is the Flame virus, that's just one question looming over perhaps the world's most intriguing digital whodunit.

With all the talk about Flame being the most powerful, ingenious and stealthy computer virus ever written, some properties of the mysterious malicious software are causing confusion.

For one thing, the program takes up 20 megabytes of space on infected machines. That's not stealthy; large files usually indicate sloppy programming. Also, unlike Stuxnet, Flame didn't come with precision targeting, and hasn't yet been credited with doing anything as impressive as hacking nuclear power plant computers. But perhaps most mysterious of all: Part of Flame?s code was written in the Lua programming language, a simple language used almost exclusively by video game programmers.? Why would a nation-state trying to commit secret espionage toy with video game software?

"This is not a stealth operation," said Marcus Carey, who worked as?a security analyst at the National Security Agency for eight years before joining the security firm Rapid7 in Boston.

News of the Flame virus hit Monday, as multiple computer security firms claimed the program represented a huge escalation in cyberwarfare. Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs, among the first to analyze the virus, called it the most powerful malicious program ever.

?The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date,? it said.

Flame reportedly comes loaded with lots of capabilities, such as remotely turning on victims' PC microphones, but it's hardly the first virus to accomplish that.? And unlike Stuxnet, it's yet clear that?Flame used a series of so-called 0-day exploits -- ?vulnerabilities in software that are undiscovered by the security industry and for which there are no antidotes.? While initial reports immediately linked Stuxnet to Flame, primarily because they both seem to target Iran, skepticism is beginning to build that the two are directly linked.

That's partly because the two programs were written in very different ways. Flame?s authors used Lua, something that confuses observers.

"Lua in a spy tool is just ... weird," said one Israeli programmer who uses Lua and requested anonymity. "The little snippet I've seen of the code seems so ... ordinary ... really like the work of your average programmer.? Stuxnet sounded genius.?

Said another: "Lua is considered a kids language.... All I see around that is built with Lua are games. I mean, the syntax is very simple."

Not exactly the stuff of high-tech international espionage. Or is it?

Lua has been around since the 1980s, developed at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It was created out of necessity; at the time, trade barriers made importing software development tools too expensive.? Development of Lua as a programming language remains centered in Brazil, where a small group of programmers make infrequent updates to the language.? But it's become a favorite platform for a few thousand devotees around the world, who are attracted to its simplicity, its ability to play well with other software and its tiny footprint, which makes it ideal for use on embedded devices or games, where memory and space are at a premium.

Unlike other programming languages that grow in size out of necessity over ?time, Lua has actually shrunken in recent years, as developers have revised and refined its architecture.

Its name ? Portuguese for ?moon? ? hints at Lua?s use as a subordinate language to attach satellite projects to larger pieces of software.

At the Lua-L discussion list, Flame talk was all the rage on Monday, as its users? small corner of the technology world was suddenly thrust into the limelight.

"In some morbid way this is an endorsement for Lua," wrote a poster identified as Enrico Colombini.? "Though I'm a bit perplexed about the alleged high sophistication of that malware, when I see unobfuscated Lua with self-descriptive names."

But longtime Lua programmer Erik Hougaard, based in Denmark, said such opinions show a fundamental misunderstanding of Lua's simple elegance as a programming tool.

"It's a well-kept secret, but it's everywhere. It's hard to pick up an Xbox game without it," said Hougaard, who now uses Lua to program robots but has also used it to create from-scratch accounting software and other financial tools at EFoqus Danmark A/S.? "It's not sexy, but it's unique. It's so small you can fit it onto a single chip."

That's essential, because Lua includes both program and programming language in one tidy package -- meaning programs written in Lua will run reliably on machines as diverse as PCs and iPhones.?

"Lua is quite common in the mobile application space. If someone has Angry Birds installed on their iPhone, they are using Lua," said Carey, the security analyst. In fact, thousands of iPhone apps are written with Lua, he said.

Hackers have taken notice. While security firms have said they can't think of another computer virus before Flame that used Lua, it is a fundamental part of a favorite hacker tool called "NMAP." NMAP is used to scan the Internet for computers with potentially exploitable vulnerabilities; it?s the first tool used by hackers looking for trouble, and by security professionals looking to plug holes. NMAP permits use of a scripting language that runs under Lua so hackers can adjust the tool as needed.

"People have been using Lua to hack networks for a while, so this shouldn't surprise anyone," Carey said.? "Attackers are just using what works."

Lua first came to hackers' attention about two or three years ago, roughly when some analysts believe Flame was written, Carey said.

As with most information about Flame, Lua's appearance in the virus can be interpreted in two ways:

  • Flame's writers may have been ahead of their time, using a unique programming language to create their cybermonster, and further confuse computer security professionals.
  • Or, Flame's writers may have been video gamers and relative amateurs who didn't bother to do much to cover their tracks.

Symantec Corp. believes the use of Lua supports the former theory. It?s one of many security firms calling Flame one?of the most powerful and complex virus ever written.

"Lua is scriptable, easy to understand, and easy to update. That said, it?s not used often," said Vikram Thakur, principal security manager at Symantec Security Response. "Anecdotally, we can?t think of another threat that is written in Lua..... The usage of the programming language is what makes the program, independent of the language, interesting."

But is it the work of genius, and a sign that cyberwar has escalated a new and dangerous level? Carey is not so sure.

"Saying this is the work of a nation-state is premature," he said. "This is not a particularly clever piece of malware or uber-elite." And despite the fact that it apparently operated in stealth for at least two years, many experts say it is too big to have been conceived as a spy tool.

"What's with the size?" said the anonymous Israeli Lua programmer. "It's like the trick they do in the movies of making a scene on the train/plane? to create a diversion while committing a crime.?

Colombini was even more direct in his assessment.

"I find it difficult to believe this to be the work of an intelligence service, at least of a decent one,? he said. ?Obfuscating ? the Lua code would have made analysis more difficult and above all slower. In the spying business gaining time has a very high value. ? No self-respecting intelligence service (would have neglected to do that)." ?

So far, most of the roughly 300 confirmed Flame infections have been in Middle Eastern countries that are natural enemies of Israel, including 189 in Iran, according to Kaspersky Lab. ?

?If it weren't for the peculiar geographical distribution, (which is) the only thing that makes one think of politically charged malware, I'd think of a sort of malware construction kit,? designed to simply collect a large series of attack tools in one place, Colombini said.? ?

Given that the subject is covert cyberwar, confusion, half-truths and disinformation are the rule rather than the exception. Already, an unnamed U.S. official has told NBC News that the U.S. government is probably responsible for it; while Israeli officials have hinted that their side developed it.

Something else concerns Carey about the way that the Flame narrative has progressed so far.? Much of what we know about Flame has come directly from Iran's Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center.

?"Generally, we don't believe anything Iran says. Here, we seem to be believing everything they say," he said. "But this incident reinforces a storyline for Iran playing the victim."

Symantec, and many other security organizations, have said the sheer size of Flame is making thorough analysis of the virus a slog. Early reports on the malicious program all came with warnings that findings were preliminary.? Symantec expects to issue a follow-up later this week.

Violent anti-science anarchists vow to strike again

It's like something out of Kafka. Anti-science anarchists in Italy appear to be ramping up their violent and frankly surreal campaign. Having claimed responsibility for shooting the boss of a nuclear engineering company in Genoa, the group has vowed to target Finmeccanica, the Italian aerospace and defence giant.

In a diatribe sent on 11 May to Corriere della Sera newspaper on 11 May, the Olga Cell of the Informal Anarchist Federation International Revolutionary Front said it shot Roberto Adinolfi, head of Ansaldo Nucleare, in the leg four days earlier. "With this action of ours, we return to you a tiny part of the suffering that you, man of science, are pouring into this world," the statement said. It also pledged a "campaign of struggle against Finmeccanica, the murderous octopus". Ansaldo is one of Finmeccanica's many offshoots.

The cell has previously targeted nanotechnology researchers, and in 2010 it tried to bomb an IBM lab in Zurich, Switzerland. The attempt resulted in three conspirators being caught and jailed.

In April 2011 the anarchists sent a parcel bomb to Swissnuclear, a group in Olten, Switzerland, that lobbies on behalf of the nuclear industry. The bomb exploded, injuring two people.

Mexican connection

The anarchist federation is also linked with eco-anarchist groups in Mexico that have targeted nanotechnology researchers, injuring two with a parcel bomb sent in August 2011 to the Monterrey Institute of Technology. Others were sent to nanotechnology researchers at the Polytechnic University of the Valley of Mexico and the Polytechnic University of Pachuca in Hidalgo.

In its letter to Corriere della Sera, the federation attacks science and technology, accusing it of serving capitalism at the expense of humanity, and turning everyone into mindless consumers of the world's resources. "In past centuries science had promised a golden era, but today it is being carried out toward self-destruction and more total slavery," it said.

"The science-technology pairing has never been at the service of humanity, and in its deepest essence it shows the imperative need to eliminate everything that is irrational, to dehumanise, to annihilate, to effectively destroy humanity," it continued. "Individuals today are free to realise their subjective selves only through the consumption and production of goods."

'European Fukushima'

Turning its attention towards the nuclear industry, the letter warned that "it is only a matter of time before a European Fukushima reaps death on our continent".

Michael Hagmann, head of communications at the Empa institute in Duebendorf, Switzerland, which investigates the potential adverse environmental impacts of nanotechnology, says that the threats should be taken seriously.

"At least with animal rights activists, you know what they want, but with these anarchists, I'm not sure," he says. "Do they want us to stop all scientific experiments, stop driving cars or go back to living in caves? I don't know."

Until now, the most notorious campaign waged against science and technology has arguably been that by the Unabomber, aka Theodore Kaczynski, a recluse and former mathematician at the University of California at Berkeley. His 20-year campaign of letter bombs killed three and injured 23. He was caught, tried and jailed for life in 1997.

Don?t Tell Mom the Babysitter?s in Her Bed

Q. Baby's Name: My husband and I have been married for two years, and had a baby six weeks ago. I am a professional with a good job; my husband works in a small family business owned by his father. When we married, I kept my maiden name; when we chose our baby's name, we agreed on a hyphenated last name. When the baby was born and my in-laws found out about the baby's name, my husband was fired from his job (via telegram!). Last week he informed me that he had spoken with his father and got his job back, but he had told his father that we would change the baby's name. While I understand his motivation, I cannot fathom living like this. I told him that I would not agree to continue to jump through hoops for his family, that I would not agree to the name change, that he couldn't expect to be able to trick them indefinitely, and that someday they would learn that their grandchild has a hyphenated last name, so he'd better figure out how to get other employment. I also told him that they are no longer welcome in our house. Had I known from the start that the name would be such an issue, I would not have suggested hyphenating the name, but now that it's done, I can't imagine bowing down to their demands. My own family thinks I am wrong. What do you think?

Video: Youth beauty pageant returns to Woodland ... - Cancer Kick

Woodland?s only youth beauty pageant is back and better than ever.

The second annual ?Princess of Hope? Charity Beauty Pageant will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Elks Lodge, benefiting the Leukemia Lymphoma Society?s Light the Night Walk.

Light The Night Walk is the nonprofit?s annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer.

The pageant, which starts at 5 p.m. and is organized by Tara Vittone of Woodland, is open for 3- to 18-year-olds. Registration is $75 and includes admission for two and a $10 concessions donation fee.

Those interested in signing their child up or purchasing single tickets ($15) can do so by emailing teamhopewoodland@att.net. Deadline for registration is June 30.

Up to 50 girls can participate in the pageant.

Last year?s pageant, which started off as an idea of Vittone?s daughter, Isabella, was held at the Woodland Opera House. About 180 tickets were sold for the evening, which raised more than $3,000.

Vittone is hoping to sell some 200-250 tickets this time around, but wouldn?t mind a sellout.

The Elks Lodge, located at 500 Bush St., is hosting this year?s rendition for free as a donation. The building holds up to 290 people.

?I want to thank them,? Vittone said of the lodge. ?They believe in the charity and that it?s for a worthy cause.?

The pageant is split into five divisions, including:

n a 3- to 5-year-old

Tiny Miss division.

n a 6- to 8-year-old Little Miss division.

n a 9- to 12-year-old Jr. Miss division.

n a 13- to 15-year-old Teen Miss division.

n a 15- to 18-year-old Miss division.

Under Vittone?s guidelines, contestants under 13 are not allowed to wear makeup.

Probable judges include Mayor Art Pimentel, Yolo Post 77?s Vince Olvera, Wayfarer Center Executive Director Leona Jull, WAVE TV President Al Smith and Woodland Chamber of Commerce?s Tom Galeazzi.

Contestants will be judged on good character, charm, poise and natural beauty.

A mandatory rehearsal will be held on the day of the event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

The show is expected to run for more than two hours, with a local acoustic band performing during intermission.

Vittone is currently seeking donations for concessions and prizes for the girls who win their age divisions. Last year, prizes included toys, Barbies and gift cards.

?Woodland really came through last year,? Vittone said. ?Woodland is an awesome community.?

A raffle will be held during the pageant. Tickets will be $1 apiece.

Additional funds will be raised after the event when a DVD of the occasion is sold.

Monetary donations can be made directly

at pages.lightthenight.org/sac/Sacra1212/TeamHope.

Money raised will help the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, which supports families in their time of need.

Vittone herself knows all about the financial hardships a family endures when a loved one gets diagnosed with cancer.

She?s been there before.

In 2003, her husband, Mark, became ill. Doctors told Mark, that he had pneumonia.

But doctors had misdiagnosed Mark. It turns out Mark actually had Stage 4 Hodgkin?s lymphoma ? a disease which is often mistaken for pneumonia.
As Mark?s weight dropped from 250 pounds to 175, the cable splicing technician at ATT was unable to work and went on disability.

With the Vittones in need of assistance, hospital workers suggested the family should contact the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

?They helped us with co-pays and mileage to and from his appointments,? Tara recalled. ?It meant a lot when you have barely any income and three children at the time.?

Later that same year, Mark went into remission.

Ever since, the Vittones have pitched in to raise funds for the society that they themselves benefited from in their time of need.
