Soszynski?s retirement on hold until doc says he can?t go on

Soszynski?s retirement on hold until doc says he can?t go onKrzysztof Soszynski appeared to have retired following his fight at UFC 140 (4:00 mark). Now we're finding out there's more to the story.

Just minutes after losing to Igor Pokrajac, Soszynski made his statement made in front of a doctor during a postfight exam. Soszynski recently admitted he didn't even remember discussing the topic that night, but that doesn't mean retirement is out of the question for the 34-year-old veteran of 39 fights.

Aside from dealing with the negative effects of multiple slugfests, Soszynski says his knees are the real problem.

"I've been having knee problems since UFC 110 - the first fight with Stephan Bonnar. Ever since then, my knees just haven't been the same. We basically beat the crap out of each other, and ever since then I haven't been the same," Soszynski told The Province. "I've basically been fighting maybe 50-60-percent capacity. I've been fighting with these obstacles now for close to two years. I've had five knee surgeries in that time - three in the last seven months or so.

Soszynski sounds like he still has some fight left in him, but it'll be up to his doctor to decide if it's worth the risk.

"I possibly have to go under the knife again - I'll go see my doctor next week - so we'll see; depends on what the doctor says. If the doctor says I can get back to fighting, I would love to have at least one more fight, and go out the proper way, not the way I did against Igor. But if the doctor says that's about it, I'm going to respect that," Soszynski said.

Soszynski's been good for the sport. He represented it well by being one of the more mature characters on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Chances are, whether he's fighting or not, he'll contribute as a coach or nutritional expert in the future.

Macedonia: Europe's New Hotspot for Illegal Immigrants (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in Les Temps.

LOJANE -- Several dozen young men are basking in the warm mid-day sun. They are Afghan and Pakistani. Behind them, on a white wall, is graffiti extolling the glories of the UĈK -- ex-Kosovo Albanian guerilla fighters.

Over the past two years, the Macedonian village of Lojane, which borders Serbia, has become a stop-over on the illegal migration routes to Western Europe. "It started when groups of three or four would arrive periodically. It didn't disturb us at first," says Selam Mehmeti, the head of the village community. "But since this summer, it's grown to a whole other dimension: there were 500 in November." (See TIME's photoessay: Immigration in Europe.)

The story these men tell is almost always the same. Khan, a 22-year-old Afghan from Kandahar, travelled through Iran, Turkey and then Greece before arriving in Bitola, Macedonia. He then headed for Lojane so he could get into Serbia. Serbian police have already sent him back to Macedonia twice.

The latest plan is to try to go through Hungary. "After that -- from Austria on -- everything will be fine. I want to go to Paris, where I have friends. The most difficult thing is to get through Serbia."

The immigrants sleep in the "jungle" -- the fields that stretch between Lojane and Miratovac, the nearest village, some three kilometers away. Miratovac is in Serbia, but its population is entirely Albanian. "The border has been closed since 1993," Blerim, an inhabitant of Lojane, explains. "Traditionally, relations between the two villages have played an important role. Both my mother and my wife come from Miratovac."

Acting like they don't exist

Where the dirt road abruptly turns to asphalt: this is the only place to demarcate the border line between Macedonia and Serbia. Serbian police and military police are on permanent patrol, and stop anyone who tries to go across, either from Miratovac, or the neighboring town of Presevo. Busloads of illegal immigrants stopped anywhere in Serbia are also sent to Lojane.

All the immigrants say they heard about the village either on the Internet or through friends. But village head Mehmeti says that's not true: he says well-organized networks wait for the immigrants along the country's southern borders, at Gevgelija and Bitola, and bring them here. "And the ones that get caught at the Tabanovce border checkpoint, (10 km from the village) come here too." (See more international news in Global Spin.)

There is no visible presence of Macedonian police: the border is guarded only on the Serbian side, villagers say. There are also no humanitarian organizations in Lojane, even though the winter cold is going to make survival conditions for the immigrants that much worse. "Everybody acts as if they don't exist," says Mehmeti.

Despite agreements made with the European Union, Serbia and Macedonia are incapable of dealing with the new tide of clandestine immigrants, who are increasingly opting to take this route instead of the heavily monitored road from Greece to Bulgaria to the north. Skopje has only one immigration detention center that no journalists have been able to visit, and that officially just has space for several dozen people.

The village head is pleased: it's quiet today, there are "only" a few dozen illegal immigrants in Lojane. However, a line of some 15 men can be seen walking through the fields from Tabanovce. A small Macedonian border police patrol watches from the derelict gas pump located halfway between the villages of Lojane and Vaksince. They neither comment, nor pursue the men, but just keep watching instead.

Update: Florida congresswoman plans hazing law

7:47 P. M.

"It's not a color thing," U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, a first-term Miami Democrat, said in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat this evening. "You have hazing in white sororities and fraternities, whether it's making children visit graveyards, or drinking liquor 'til you pass out or smoking drugs."

Wilson, an educator who headed a dropout-prevention program for Miami-Dade schools when she was in the Florida Legislature, was regional director for Alpha Kappa Alpha, the nation's first black sorority, from 1986 through 1990. She said she became know as "the haze-buster" for rooting out the ritualized harassment of sorority pledges, band members, new players on sports teams and other organizations.

"I stopped it. I stopped it," Wilson said of her AKA tenure. "They were afraid of me."

She said "you can reach them two ways" -- by getting adult alumni to advise students not to inflict indignities on pledges and by holding students responsible for submitting to violent or abusive initiation rites. Getting young people to talk about hazing is difficult, she acknowledged, but Wilson said her experience has shown that the silence of victims helps the offenders perpetrate the "demeaning, dangerous and, sadly, deadly" tradition of hazing.

"Each one of those fraternities and sororities has graduate members who can mentor," she said. "Also, you can put some onus on the children who are being hazed, and make it their responsibility to report it?.I know they're going up against a wall of tradition and that wall is very deep, especially among people who have already graduated from college."

Wilson said "it's gotten better but it still exists" since the Florida Legislature passed a state statute making hazing a misdemeanor -- or a felony, if severe injury or death results.

Champion, 26, died Nov. 19 in Orlando. A medical examiner's report released last week ruled his death a homicide, caused by a severe beating.

FAMU President James Ammons suspended all appearances by the Marching 100 indefinitely and moved to fire band director Julian White. White is fighting to keep his tenured faculty position, saying he suspended more than two-dozen Rattler band members involved in hazing and had reported incidents to Ammons repeatedly prior to Champion's death.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the homicide, as well as undescribed "financial irregularities" in band operations.

Separately, three men have been charged with beating a young Atlanta woman who suffered a cracked thigh bone and knee injuries. She subsequently left FAMU.

2:35 P. M.

A Florida Congresswoman with a long history of combating hazing in schools plans to introduce federal legislation next month to outlaw the practice.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, a first-term Democrat from Miami, said today her bill was motivated by the current investigation at Florida A&M University into the Nov. 19 death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating his death, which medical examiners determined to be a homicide caused by a severe beating.

?I am having policy discussions now with presidents of historically black colleges and universities, band members and presidents of Greek-letter organizations so that we will be able to craft a strong bill for introduction next month,? said Wilson.

She said hazing ?is demeaning, dangerous and, sadly, deadly.?

Wilson, an educator and administrator for Miami-Dade County schools before her election to Congress, supported anti-bullying and hazing legislation as a member of the Florida Legislature. She also fought hazing as south Atlantic regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

She said Champion?s death and the FAMU investigation prompted her to work on a federal hazing law. The state has already made hazing illegal.

?It?s time that we put an end to this horrible and humiliating ritual once and for all, so that no more students suffer the way that Robert and others have,? Wilson said in announcing her planned legislation.

Berry reviews first half of term as Albuquerque mayor

KOB Eyewitness News 4 caught up with Mayor Richard Berry who is right smack in the middle of his first term in Albuquerque.

He is talking about his staff's biggest accomplishments and one of his biggest setbacks so far.

Mayor Richard Berry said, from the very beginning, his focus has been on public safety, fiscal responsibility and taking better care of Albuquerque's most vulnerable.

He has seen major progress in public safety.

"Well we've got crime at a 20-year low in the city of Albuquerque - we've got the murder rate hopefully on a 20-year low by the end of this year...Albuquerque citizens are safer than when we started," he said.

Berry said that came at a price.

For some city employees, it was a 2.2 percent pay cut - an unpopular move, but one Berry said was necessary to avoid layoffs.

"We've had to cut $130 million out of the first two budgets alone since I've been the mayor, but we've been able to do that while still keeping our employees on the job, while still keeping services intact to the community - without raising taxes," Berry said.

This fall, voters rejected bond question 12, also known as ABQ: The Plan.

Among many things, it would have brought in total of $50 million for an ambitious multi-sports complex and for a new Paseo Del Norte and I-25 interchange.

"We ran into opposition and we ran into funded opposition and that funded opposition came from several of our unions - police, fire and AFSCME all put money towards fighting bond question 12," Berry said.

The mayor believes employee pay cuts were the reason for the opposition.

"I can only imagine it's because there was a pay cut and they want to make sure they get employees back to square - well so do we. We just think that, I think as a mayor that the best way to do that is to grow the pie in our city?bring more revenue into the city," Berry said.

The mayor said keeping the city competitive and attractive will bring in the dollars necessary to give employees raises.

He believes in it so much, he is working on getting some of the projects done one at a time.

"ABQ: The Plan is certainly not gone, we had one setback but we have so many other things that we're doing on ABQ: The Plan," Berry said.

Berry said once Albuquerque can start bringing in more business and can start attracting more major events, it will make the city stronger and better.

"ABQ the plan is just a way of saying we need to invest in our community and trying to change the discussion from should we invest in our city to how should we invest," Berry said.

How to plan your dream wedding in Colorado

Planning a wedding can be both incredibly exciting and a bit stressful, but with a little extra research it's easy to have the wedding of your dreams in the mountains of Colorado. Here are the top tips for getting married in Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and other beautiful Colorado mountains towns.

1)????? Choose a venue that is meaningful to you: there are many gorgeous locations for a wedding in Colorado, so rather than trying to choose the most beautiful of such an abundance of splendor, consider selecting a place that has special meaning for you. For example, my friend Kelly felt that the mountains had a special meaning for her: "Ryan taught me how to snowboard at Breckenridge and we really got to know each other while we were snowboarding. During that time, I really realized how amazing the mountains are - it's something that a picture or words can't explain."

2)????? Balance meaning with vision: just because you're from a certain town or learned how to ski on a particular mountain doesn't mean you have to get married there if it doesn't feel right to you. Choose a venue that fits for a variety of reasons.

"We looked for a venue for 7 months and, in August of this year, we went to visit a few more venues in Beaver Creek, including the Ritz Carlton at Bachelor?Gulch," explained Kelly. "When we walked the lodge, I just felt like it was 'right.' It was cozy, relaxing, 'mountainy' and yet... it had that Colorado Lodge feel that we wanted -- and most of all, it was still classy and elegant."

3)????? Get a great photographer and videographer: saving those special memories is so important, this is perhaps the most essential area to not cut any corners. Find a great photographer who really specializes in capturing the moment rather than creating one, and consider also getting a videographer to really remember all the sights and sounds of the day.

4)????? Have a back-up plan for the weather: seriously, it's like bringing an umbrella so that it won't rain: your best guarantee that everything will work out fine. Even if you do need to go with your alternate plan and it's not exactly as beautiful as the great outdoors, it's much better than freezing in the rain or snow. "There is a great room with floor to ceiling windows, with views of the mountains," described Kelly. "ALMOST just as beautiful as the ceremony venue that we have planned, which is outside near the Ritz."

5)????? Have fun: obviously, the most important part of your wedding is for you to be present and enjoy the experience, which is such an incredible day in your life. If you feel like you're going to stress out about the details, don't feel bad about getting a wedding planner to help you relax.

"We were going to just do the wedding ourselves, but... after a few weeks of thinking about all of the stress that would come the week or so before the wedding, I had a breakdown in front of Ryan," said Kelly. "SO, we decided to hire a wedding planner for 'support' up until the week of the wedding. A week before the wedding, the wedding planner will take complete 'control' so we can have that week to be much more relaxed and less stressful."

Having a great venue, a fantastic photographer, a planner, and a good backup plan for the weather will all help you to relax and appreciate every moment. Enjoy the experience, and see you on the slopes!

Romney, sensing opening, makes big push in Iowa (AP)

CLINTON, Iowa ? Mitt Romney has stepped into the center of a perfect storm in Iowa ? and he's going all in.

Sensing an opening to win next Tuesday's caucuses, an ever-more confident Romney is campaigning hard in a region of the state where he performed well in his failed 2008 race, with a bus tour and new crush of advertising intended to bolster his closing argument: that he's the most electable candidate against President Barack Obama.

It's thanks to a combination of luck and planning that Romney now finds himself in strong contention for an Iowa caucus victory that would give him a boost heading into the next contest, in New Hampshire, where the former Massachusetts governor's standing is strong.

Not that he's publicly entertaining the notion of back-to-back victories.

"I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms. I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can," Romney said Wednesday. "But I can tell you: If the people here in Clinton are any example, or any indication, of what's going to happen in the process, I feel pretty good."

In a sign of his growing confidence that a victory may be at hand, Romney plans to spend caucus night in Iowa.

Advisers are redoubling efforts to try to capitalize on the slide in support for Newt Gingrich and skepticism of Ron Paul by making a concerted effort to increase turnout in areas where Romney did well four years ago. His campaign also added at least $100,000 in additional advertising for the final days ? and bought broadcast advertising for the first time in the Quad Cities market in eastern Iowa.

And, while Romney is largely shying away from criticizing his rivals, he jabbed at Paul, who has emerged as his chief rival in Iowa, on Wednesday ? another indication of Romney's efforts to triumph here.

"One of the people running for president thinks it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon," Romney said in Muscatine in response to a question from the audience. "I don't."

This is a far more aggressive strategy than the one Romney has employed all year after pouring $10 million into the state in 2008 only to lose it in a defeat that crippled his entire campaign. He couldn't allay concerns about his Mormon faith or his reversals on some social issues in a state where evangelical Republicans and other social conservatives dominate.

Romney approached Iowa more cautiously for this race, so much so that until recently aides worked out of an attic in Des Moines on a shoestring budget. He also had spent less than $200,000 on the state before the campaign started buying TV ads in December.

But even as advisers worked to play down expectations, they quietly stayed in contact with backers from his first campaign ? and Romney stood at the ready to try to take advantage of an opportunity in the race, should one present itself.

It looks like it has.

Social conservatives that united behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008 remain splintered among a handful of candidates that include Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Gingrich, the former House speaker, was Romney's latest threat but he's taken a significant beating from an onslaught of advertisements by a super PAC run by Romney's allies. Paul, a libertarian-leaning Republican, is a serious contender in Iowa but he has foreign policy views so outside the Republican mainstream that most Republicans believe he has little chance to win the GOP nomination.

On Wednesday, a new CNN/TIME poll in Iowa showed Romney leading with 25 percent support. Paul had 22 percent and Santorum drew 16 percent while Gingrich had fallen to 14 percent.

So Romney is trying to seize the moment. And it may be working.

Overflow crowds have been greeting Romney at every stop of his three-day, seven-city tour on a bus plastered with his campaign logo and "Conservative, Businessman, Leader" slogan on the side.

So many people showed up at a deli in Clinton that Romney's staff also sent the candidate to visit the restaurant across the street. Before sunrise, the line to see Romney at Elly's Coffee and Tea in Muscatine stretched out the door and down the block.

On Tuesday night, the campaign said that only 150 people had RSVPed to attend Romney's speech in Davenport. But more than 500 people showed up, shutting at least 200 people out of the Blackhawk Hotel ballroom. Many area voters were notified only that morning of Romney's visit.

People seem to like what they hear.

"He's probably the best chance to beat Obama," said Carol Hetzler, a medical secretary who backed Sen. John McCain's in 2008. She had also considered voting for Gingrich.

And Tim McCleary, who was waiting in line at Elly's before 7 a.m. to see Romney, said: "The only reason I'm supporting Romney is because he can win the election."

As Romney visits small towns in eastern Iowa, he's also doing countless interviews with the local media. He spent most of Wednesday morning talking to radio stations and small Iowa newspapers.

He's also relying on friends to help him make the sale.

Romney was dispatching surrogates from nearby states, including South Dakota Sen. John Thune, former Sens. Norm Coleman of Minnesota and Jim Talent of Missouri, to campaign in Iowa. Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole was dialing influential activists Tuesday, including former state GOP chairman Steve Grubbs, who is a well-connected campaign operative in Davenport in the heart of Romney's eastern Iowa base.

"He made the argument that the candidate who has shown the ability to win by the effectiveness of the campaign he's run is Mitt Romney," said Grubbs, who worked on Dole's 1996 campaign. "At the end of the day, he was selling electability."

It's the case Romney will try to make in North Liberty, Waterloo and Ames on Thursday and in Des Moines on Friday.

Mindful not to ignore New Hampshire altogether, Romney planned events there Friday and Saturday. Four of his five sons will campaign in the state Thursday before heading to Iowa this weekend. His wife, Ann, will remain in Iowa all weekend, campaigning in the western part of the state. Romney returns to Iowa later Saturday.

Japan to Ease Ban on Arms Exports

TOKYO?Japan's Cabinet decided Tuesday to effectively lift a four-decade self-imposed ban on weapons shipments that has nominally prohibited Japanese arms makers from joint development and export of military technology.

The move to abandon the Cold War-era restrictions comes as Japan seeks to defer costs for developing and manufacturing advanced technology in areas such as ballistic missile defense and jet fighters. While there have been many exceptions in the past, the decision marks the first major revision since the ban was introduced in 1967 and tightened in 1976.

Govt hails India's telecoms success story

About 870 million telephone connections were added against the target of 600 million during 11th five year plan (2007-2012) with the overall subscriber base reaching 914.60 million, the government said.

While the overall teledensity, or the number of connections in use for every 100 individuals living within an area, stood 76.03 percent, the urban teledensity has already reached 166.54 percent and the government hopes to raise rural teledensity to 40 percent by the end of 2014.

The government said that 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) are expected to reinvigorate the maturing urban markets and help in bringing balanced growth of economy by boosting broadband growth, where current subscriber base stands at more than 12 million.

Though launched with much fanfare in January this year and later perceived to have received a relatively lukewarm response from customers, mobile number portability (MNP), or the ability to switch carriers while retaining the number, had 19 million takers as of Nov 30, 2011.

Despite its growth, 2011 was seen by industry analysts largely as an adverse year for the telecoms sector with 2G spectrum scandal overshadowing headlines, even as fierce competition between existing players and a brewing regulatory stalemate over 3G roaming pacts kindled uncertainty.

The government?s move to usher more transparent protocols through a new telecoms policy, that was announced earlier, was said to be likely to be approved by June next year, delaying the keenly awaited policy by about six months to allow more time for consultations. (IBNS)

Amid NKorea mourning, vows to support new leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Towns and villages across North Korea set up mourning centers in a stepped-up show of public grief Friday over the death of leader Kim Jong Il, but attention and allegiances clearly began shifting to his young, untested son and heir.

Scenes of dramatic mass mourning have been a daily occurrence in Pyongyang since Kim's death was announced on Monday. Thousands of North Koreans ? including his son Kim Jong Un and other top officials ? have poured into a funeral palace in the capital to view his body or bow before his portrait.

By Friday, mourning stations had also been established in provincial, city and county seats, and at institutions and enterprises across the country.

"The sorrow at the loss of our leader is tremendous. But we would not stay in grief only," Sok Kil Nam, a 24-year-old worker at the Chollima Steel Complex in the city of Nampho, told The Associated Press. He added: "As long as we have great comrade Kim Jong Un, the cause of the respected General Kim Jong Il will go on, so we continue working, not leaving our work sites."

North Korea's official media have been quick to feature the younger Kim in coverage of the mourning ? a strong indication that the country's leadership is behind installing the 20-something son as Kim Jong Il's successor and the public face of the nation.

North Korean television showed hours of footage Friday of weeping citizens, and state media reported that small children stood in the bitter cold and wailed over Kim Jong Il's death "at the top of their voices" as they held fairy tale books that Kim had given them.

Officials in Seoul and Washington, after initial jitters over possible instability, are calling the transition so far a smooth one. There have been no outward signs of unrest on the streets or unusual troop movements along the borders.

"We continue to monitor and assess the situation and continue normal operations for stability and security in the region," said Cmdr. Ron Steiner, a spokesman for the U.S. 7th Fleet, which is based in Japan.

The North, however, remains highly sensitive to what it sees as outside threats.

One North Korean media outlet known for being particularly strident in its commentary slammed South Korea for putting its military on a heightened alert level after Kim's death, calling it an "insult" that derides the dignity of a nation in mourning.

The government-run website, Uriminzokkiri, also said the fate of relations between the two Koreas depends on how the South deals with requests from its civilians to visit the North to pay respects to Kim.

"We are watching the attitude of the South Korean government," it said.

It said Pyongyang will accept anyone from South Korea hoping to pay respects to Kim Jong Il and that routes by both air and land will be opened. North Korea has said through its other media that foreign delegations would not be allowed in to attend the official funeral for Kim on Dec. 28-29.

Keenly aware of the sensitivities, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has sought to assure Pyongyang that his country is "not hostile," despite putting its front-line troops on alert since Kim's death was announced. On Friday, the presidential Blue House announced it had lifted an emergency mode for all government workers except those involved in security and foreign affairs.

Even so, South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said his government remains firm in its position not to allow civilians to visit North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except the families of former President Kim Dae-jung and former Hyundai Asan chairman Chung Mong-hun.

Kim met with Kim Jong Il in 2000 in Pyongyang in a landmark summit meeting between the two Koreas. Chung led a joint tourism project with North Korea that yielded much-sought hard currency for Pyongyang until its suspension in 2008.

In a parliamentary hearing, South Korean Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik said Seoul is open to dialogue with the North, if that would be constructive.

"I hope the emergence of the new leader will lead North Korea to move in the right direction and enhance the livelihoods of the North Korean people," Yu said.

Communication between the United States and North Korea also still appears open as the North continues its official 11-day mourning period. But the State Department said it wasn't expecting any meeting with the North Koreans this week, and little contact before the mourning period ends Dec. 29.

In a strong endorsement of the young Kim, the North's main newspaper Rodong Sinmun has urged the country to "rally, rally and rally behind great comrade Kim Jong Un and faithfully uphold his leadership."

It called him "the outstanding leader of our party, military and people and a great successor."

South Korea's intelligence agency has told Parliament members that an ad hoc committee in which Kim Jong Un is a vice chairman is expected to handle key state affairs before he formally becomes the country's leader.

The agency predicts Kim Jong Un's aunt Kim Kyong Hui, a key Workers' Party official, and Jang Song Thaek, her husband and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, will play larger roles supporting the heir, according to a lawmaker who spoke to the AP.

Olympus' Tokyo offices raided over accounting scandal

Eke. A nearly-century old outfit is currently giving up office space to Japanese prosecutors, who today moved in on Olympus' Tokyo facilities in a raid surrounding an ongoing accounting investigation. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, the scandal involves many billions of dollars -- "irregularities" that have raised serious concerns about the outfit's handling of funds. It's bruited that the company has been running a scheme to conceal over $1.5 billion in investment losses, and we're told that the raid should pass right on through Olympus' headquarters and into the "homes of executives involved in the cover-up." All of this follows an admission last month that the firm had used "inflated payments made in acquisitions in recent years," and while it remains unclear what all of this means for its future, there's no doubt a few dark months are ahead as things sort themselves out. So much for looking pretty for the camera, eh?

Economy ends tough 2011 on a surprising upswing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? WASHINGTON (AP) ? The economy is ending 2011 on a roll.

The job market is healthier. Americans are spending lustily on holiday gifts. A long-awaited turnaround for the depressed housing industry may be under way. Gas is cheaper. Factories are busier. Stocks are higher.

Not bad for an economy faced with a debt crisis in Europe and, as recently as last summer, scattered predictions of a second recession at home. Instead, the economy has grown faster each quarter this year, and the last three months should be the best.

"Things are looking up," says Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

When The Associated Press surveyed 43 economists in August, they pegged the likelihood of another recession at roughly one in four. The Dow Jones industrial average was lurching up or down by 400 points or more some days.

There was plenty of reason for gloom. A political standoff over the federal borrowing limit brought the United States to the brink of default and cost the nation its top-drawer credit rating.

Most analysts now rule out another recession. They think the economy will grow at an annual rate of more than 3 percent from October through December, the fastest pace since a 3.8 percent performance in the spring of last year.

Many economists still worry that the year-end surge isn't sustainable, in part because the average worker's pay is barely rising. And Europe may already be sliding into a recession that will infect the United States.

The outlook could darken further if Congress can't break the impasse blocking an extension of a Social Security tax cut for 160 million Americans and emergency unemployment benefits.

Yet for now, the economy is on an upswing that few had predicted:

? JOBS: The number of people applying for unemployment benefits came in at 366,000 last week, down from a peak of 659,000 in March 2009. Even in good economic times, the figure would be between 280,000 and 350,000.

Employers have added at least 100,000 jobs five months in a row, the longest streak since 2006. And the unemployment rate fell from 9 percent in October to 8.6 percent last month, the lowest since March 2009.

Small businesses are hiring again, too, according to the National Federation of Independent Business.

Business is up at AG Salesworks in Norwood, Mass., which helps technology companies like Motorola find new customers. The firm has hired 26 workers to restore its staff to 56, erasing the job cuts from the recession. CEO Paul Alves plans to add an employee or two a month as long as growth continues.

"I do see more confidence than I saw 12 months ago," Alves says. "But it's good, not great. Robust isn't the word I'd use."

? SPENDING: The holiday shopping season has turned out better than anyone expected. Sales from November through Saturday were up 2.5 percent from last year. Americans have spent $32 billion online, 15 percent more than a year ago. Retails sales were up in November for the sixth month in a row. People are spending, in particular, on clothes, cars, electronics and furniture.

? CONSUMER CONFIDENCE: Americans felt better about the economy in November than they had since July, according to the Conference Board, a business group that tracks the mood of consumers.

The board's consumer confidence index climbed 15 points to 56 in November, the biggest one-month jump since April 2003. During the Great Recession, the index fell as low as 25.

"It seems like the confidence of the traditional American consumer is higher right now," says Jim Newman, executive vice president of operations at the digital marketing company Acquity Group, which has added 100 jobs since summer.

? GAS: Falling prices at the pump have freed more money for consumers to spend on appliances, furniture, vacations and other things that help drive the economy. The national average for regular unleaded has sunk to $3.21 a gallon since peaking at $3.98 in May, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge.

? INVENTORIES: Businesses are restocking shelves and warehouses, more confident that customers will buy their products. In October, their inventories were up 8.7 percent from a year earlier. An increase in inventories is expected to account for perhaps a third of growth this quarter.

The battered housing market might be showing signs of recovery. Home construction rose more than 9 percent in November from October, driven by apartment building. And the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of previously occupied homes rose 4 percent in November.

But housing is climbing out of a deep hole: The existing homes sold at an annual rate of 4.4 million ? well below the 6 million that would signal a healthy housing market. And the real-estate agents' trade group revealed Wednesday that it overstated sales by 3.5 million during and after the Great Recession.

Once they peer into 2012, economists turn cautious. Bernard Baumohl, chief economist with the Economic Outlook Group, says that stronger consumer spending "is absolutely unsustainable. .... Wages have not kept pace with inflation all year."

The government says that once you adjust for inflation, weekly earnings dropped 1.8 percent from November 2010 to last month. Consumers have used savings or credit cards to finance their purchases. Once bills come due in early 2012, Baumohl foresees a cutback in spending.

Baumohl is so pessimistic that he expects the economy to shrink at a 0.2 percent annual rate in the first three months of 2012 and to end the year with no more than 1.8 percent growth.

Europe is almost sure to slide into recession, even if its policymakers find a solution to the continent's debt crisis. In the worst case, a chaotic breakup of the euro currency could ignite a worldwide financial panic.

Joe Echevarria, CEO of the accounting and consulting firm Deloitte LLP, says his company's clients are delaying hiring or expansion decisions to see if Europe's crisis will be resolved.

Another worry ? again ? is Washington. President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress still had not broken their impasse Wednesday on how to extend a Social Security tax cut. Without an extension, taxes will go up $1,000 in 2012 for someone making $50,000. A couple making $100,000 each would pay $4,000 more.

Failing to extend the tax cut, combined with the end of long-term unemployment benefits and other federal budget cuts, could shave 1.7 percentage points from growth in 2012, warns Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

Forecasters are also chastened by the past two years. Since the Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, the economy has stalled twice just when it appeared to be gaining momentum.

In mid-2010, businesses slowed spending sharply. This year, the damage came from protests in the Middle East that drove oil prices higher at the start of the year, the earthquake in Japan in March, budget cuts by state and local governments and the stalemate in Washington.

But Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors says he thinks the fears about next year are overblown and the economy will grow 3 percent in 2012. Next year will be all about jobs. If job growth keeps accelerating, the economy is much more likely to meet Naroff's predictions than the pessimists'.

In addition, Naroff says, that's because consumers and businesses have grown more confident. If Europe averts disaster ? a crackup of the eurozone ? and endures only a mild recession, as Naroff expects, the impact on the United States will be minimal, he says.

"If you stopped the average person on the street and asked, `Are you slowing your spending because of what's happening in Europe?' they'd ask, `What planet are you from?'"

Penn St. coach says he saw, reported molestation (AP)

HARRISBURG, Pa. ? As soon as he walked into the Penn State locker room, Mike McQueary heard running water and rhythmic, slapping sounds of "skin on skin." He looked in a mirror and saw a naked Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant coach, holding a young boy by the waist from behind, up against the wall in the campus shower.

"I just saw Coach Sandusky in the showers with a boy and what I saw was wrong and sexual," McQueary recalled telling his father that night in 2002. He repeated it the next morning to coach Joe Paterno, who slumped deep into his chair at his kitchen table.

"He said, `I'm sorry you had to see that,'" McQueary said.

McQueary's testimony Friday at a preliminary hearing for two Penn State officials accused of covering up the story was the most detailed, public account yet of the child sex abuse allegations that have upended the university's football program and the entire central Pennsylvania campus. Paterno and the university president have lost their jobs, and officials Tim Curley and Gary Schultz are accused of lying to a grand jury about what McQueary told them.

A Pennsylvania judge on Friday held Curley, the university's athletic director, and Schultz, a retired senior vice president, for trial after the daylong hearing.

Curley said that McQueary never relayed the seriousness of what he saw, and said he was only told that Sandusky was "horsing around" with a boy but that his conduct wasn't sexual.

He said he told the university president about the episode and the top official at a children's charity that Sandusky founded, but never told university police. "I didn't see any reason because I didn't think at the time it was a crime," he told the grand jury, according to testimony read into the record on Friday.

Curley, Schultz and Paterno have been criticized for never telling police about the 2002 charges. Prosecutors say Sandusky continued to abuse boys for six more years. Sandusky has denied having inappropriate sexual contact with boys.

In about two hours on the witness stand, McQueary said again and again that what he saw was a sexual act, although he stopped short of saying he was sure that Sandusky, now 67, had raped the boy.

"I believe Jerry was sexually molesting him and having some type of sexual intercourse with him," McQueary said on Friday. He said later he "can't say 100 percent" that Sandusky and the boy were having intercourse because he was seeing Sandusky from behind.

He said after talking to his father, he went over to Paterno's home the next morning and said that what he had seen "was way over the lines, it was extremely sexual in nature." He said he would not have used words like sodomy or intercourse with Paterno; he did not get into that much detail out of respect for the coach, he said.

Paterno told the grand jury that McQueary said he saw Sandusky doing something of a "sexual nature" with the youngster but that he didn't press for details.

"I didn't push Mike ... because he was very upset," Paterno said. "I knew Mike was upset, and I knew some kind of inappropriate action was being taken by Jerry Sandusky with a youngster."

Paterno told McQueary he would talk to others about what he'd reported.

McQueary said he met nine or 10 days later with Curley and Schultz and told them he'd seen Sandusky and a boy, both naked, in the shower after hearing skin-on-skin slapping sounds.

"I would have described that it was extremely sexual and I thought that some kind of intercourse was going on," said McQueary.

McQueary said he was left with the impression both men took his report seriously. When asked why he didn't go to police, he referenced Schultz's position as a vice president at the university who had overseen the campus police

"I thought I was talking to the head of the police, to be frank with you," he said. "In my mind it was like speaking to a (district attorney). It was someone who police reported to and would know what to do with it."

The square-jawed, red-haired assistant coach spoke in a steady voice in his first public account of the alleged abuse, sometimes turning his seat and leaning toward defense lawyers to answer questions. His voice rose a few times and he blushed once when describing the sexual encounter in the shower.

Defense lawyers for Curley and Schultz argued that a perjury charge should not be based solely on a person's testimony under oath contradicting someone else's testimony. The defense said uncorroborated testimony from McQueary is not enough and sought to pick apart the ways he described the shower scene differently to different people.

The defense noted that McQueary admitted changing his description of the shower encounter when speaking with Paterno ? enough so that the coach didn't believe a crime had occurred.

McQueary said he had stopped by a campus football locker room to drop off a pair of sneakers in the spring of 2002 when he saw Sandusky with the boy, who he estimated was 10 or 12 years old.

McQueary, 37, said he has never described what he saw as anal rape or anal intercourse and couldn't see Sandusky's genitals, but that "it was very clear that it looked like there was intercourse going on."

In its report last month, the grand jury summarized McQueary's testimony as saying he "saw a naked boy ... with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky."

McQueary said he peeked into the shower three times ? the first via a mirror, the other two times directly. The last time he looked in, Sandusky and the boy had separated, he said. He said he didn't say anything, but "I know they saw me. They looked directly in my eye, both of them."

McQueary said the entire encounter ? from when he first entered the locker room to when he retreated to his office ? lasted about 45 seconds.

Curley told the grand jury that he couldn't recall his specific conversation with McQueary, but McQueary never reported seeing anal intercourse or other sexual conduct. He said he spoke to Sandusky about it, who first denied having been in the shower with a boy, but later changed his story.

Schultz said he remembered McQueary and Paterno describing what the younger coach saw only in a very general way.

"I had the impression it was inappropriate," Schultz told the grand jury. "I had the feeling it was some kind of wrestling activity and maybe Jerry might have grabbed a young boy's genitals."

Under cross-examination, McQueary said he considered what he saw a crime but didn't call police because "it was delicate in nature."

"I tried to use my best judgment," he said. "I was sure the act was over." He said he never tried to find the boy.

Paterno, Schultz and Curley didn't testify, but District Judge William C. Wenner read their grand jury testimony from January at the Dauphin County hearing.

Curley's attorney, Caroline Roberto, said prosecutors "will never be able to reach their burden of proof at a trial."

Schultz's attorney, Tom Farrell, predicted his client would be acquitted.

He also took a shot at Paterno, saying, "I'm an Italian from Brooklyn, and he may not have called the police but he may have done what I would have done, which is get the boys in the car with a few baseball bats and crowbars and take it to the fellow."

Sandusky says he is innocent of 52 criminal charges stemming from what authorities say were sexual assaults over 12 years on 10 boys in his home, on Penn State property and elsewhere.

Curley, 57, was placed on leave by the university after his arrest. Schultz, 62, returned to retirement after spending about four decades at the school, most recently as senior vice president for business and finance, and treasurer.

US Still Seeking Legal Immunity for Defense Contractors in Iraq ...

The Obama administration is continuing to pursue an agreement with the Iraqi government that would give U.S. defense contractors remaining there beyond 2012 immunity from Iraqi law.

While the approximately 17,000 diplomats and servicemembers working for the State Department are shielded by diplomatic immunity from prosecution under Iraqi law, the thousands of private contractors and mercenaries no longer have such protections, pursuant to the 2008 Status of Forces Agreement.

The Obama administration?s plan to keep thousands of U.S. soldiers in Iraq beyond the December 2011 deadline to withdraw fell through in October when the Iraqi government would not grant legal immunity to the troops.

Providing immunity from Iraqi law to any lingering security forces is highly unpopular in Iraq, especially after the 2007 Nisour Square massacre in which U.S. mercenary soldier from Blackwater Inc. murdered 17 Iraqi civilians. Coincidentally, Blackwater is trying to renew contracts to march back into Iraq under a new company name, ?Academi.?

The effort to get legal protections for defense contractors is an example of the Obama administration?s refusal to put an end to the occupation and domination of Iraq. And it may be successful.??Neither side has closed the door at this point,? said OSC-I spokesman Lt. Col. Tom Hanson.

Gingrich: I'm trying not to appear 'zany'

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich says he's trying to edit himself so he doesn't come across as "zany."

Gingrich's remarks at the Republican debate Thursday night were aimed at rival Mitt Romney, who in an interview on Wednesday used the word "zany" to describe the former House speaker.

Gingrich smiled when he was asked a question about how he would counsel Republicans on the political controversy over construction of a new pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

Gingrich said that at times he is accused of using language that is too strong and so he was "editing" himself. He then quipped that he's very concerned about not appearing to be "zany."

Romney has stepped up attacks on Gingrich's temperament as Gingrich has vaulted to the top of the GOP field.

Global stocks mixed, euro flat on downgrade fears (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? World stocks were mixed and the euro was flat on Friday as worries about downgrades of weaker euro zone countries curbed risk appetite, pushing aside an improved outlook on the U.S. economy.

Volume was below average across financial markets heading into the weekend. Trading was choppy as perceived risky assets gave up much of their initial gains.

Anxiety over potential ratings downgrades in European sovereign debt and their repercussion on the region's banks underpinned safety bids for U.S. and German government bonds.

Fitch Ratings on Friday placed Belgium, Cyprus, France, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia and Spain on watch for possible downgrade and warned that a comprehensive solution to this festering problem is "technically and politically beyond reach".

It affirmed France's AAA-rating but could strip the second-biggest euro zone economy of its top-notch rating in two years.

Fitch's rating move and dire warning about Europe trumped optimism about the U.S. economy following recent upbeat data.

Government data released on Friday showed U.S. inflation pressure waning, fanning expectations the Federal Reserve could do more to boost economic growth. The latest consumer price report followed data on Thursday suggesting a possible pick-up in job growth, which has been meager during the current recovery.

Investor fears about the euro zone debt crisis persist as European leaders have not delivered more measures to contain the crisis after promising increased fiscal disciple at a summit in Brussels last week.

"There remains a great deal of concern about the direction of the euro zone," said Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at BNY Mellon in New York. "We're still not trading on fundamentals and haven't been for some time."

The MSCI world equity index rose 0.3 percent after hitting a three-week low on Thursday. The index is still down 3.5 percent on the week.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) closed down 2.42 points, or 0.02 percent, at 11,866.39. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 3.91 points, or 0.32 percent, at 1,219.66. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 14.32 points, or 0.56 percent, at 2,555.33.

On the week, the Dow fell 2.7 percent; the S&P lost 2.9 percent and the Nasdaq declined 3.5 percent. (.N)

European stocks (.FTEU3) ended down 0.5 percent, erasing earlier gains on selling tied to expiration of options contracts. They finished 2.9 percent lower on the week.

Tokyo's Nikkei (.N225) ended up 0.3 percent, reducing its weekly drop to 1.6 percent.

The euro clung to the $1.30 area versus the dollar after falling to 11-month lows on Wednesday. The 17-nation common currency was poised to close up 0.1 percent against the greenback after touching a high of $1.3084. It lost 2.6 percent against the dollar on the week.

PERIPHERAL YIELDS STAY HIGH

Long-term borrowing costs for Italy and Spain, whose heavy debt loads have worried investors and rating agencies, fell early in the trading day. That helped to steady the euro and briefly boosted European shares.

But they ratcheted back up to alarmingly high levels, with the yield on 10-year Italian government bonds creeping back above 7 percent, which analysts deem unsustainable for the euro zone's third-biggest economy to pay.

Italy faces a confidence vote in parliament, called to speed up approval of a 33 billion euro ($43 billion) austerity package aimed at restoring investor confidence.

Amid these political developments, worries linger about the euro zone debt crisis and have supported U.S. Treasuries and German Bunds. They pushed aside optimism about the U.S. economy and hopes the European Central Bank will ultimately step in to buy bonds of troubled euro zone peripheral countries.

Bund futures ended up 1 point at 138.66 at their highest in four weeks. Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes were up 17/32 in price for a yield of 1.85 percent, touching their lowest levels in early October.

Gold, another traditional safehaven asset, snapped a four-day losing streak tied to fund liquidation.

Spot bullion in London ended up 1.5 percent at $1,593.68 an ounce after touching the lowest level since late September on Thursday. For the week, gold fell 6.8 percent, the biggest weekly decline since late September.

The oil market struggled to hold early gains on nagging worries about the euro zone crisis causing a global economic slowdown. February Brent crude futures settled down 25 cents at $103.35 a barrel, while spot U.S. oil futures settled down 34 cents at $93.53, briefly falling below their 300-day moving average.
