Mites is not the only answer for every problem. If a cat is licking their fur off in spots it could be a sign that they are in great pain. It could also mean they have a thyroid condition. I only recently learned this and I want to pass the information on to cat owners. My Ziggy licked all the fur off his belly. He kept throwing up and we naturally thought it was because of all the hair he was ingesting. It was only when the vomit started being dark blackish brown that we got really alarmed. It turned out that the poor baby had stomach cancer which was found out after exploratory surgery! Very sad. Not mites!

Licking fur off can also be a sign they are in pain. My Ziggy licked all the fur off his belly and we later discovered that he had stomach cancer. Poor baby.

Wow... someone is really hooked on the "mite" diagnosis! Cats can lose hair for psychological issues too. One of my cats is an "over-groomer" due to his anxious temerment. He has obsessive grooming which can be treated with the human OCD drug clomipramine.
Cats also go through coat changes at the beginning of summer and at the end of autumn.
Always make sure your cat has ample supply of fresh drinking water too!
