Swiss lab wants guarantee in Arafat death inquiry

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - A Swiss laboratory will help investigate the unexplained 2004 death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat only if it receives guarantees its findings will not be used for political purposes, a spokesman for the lab said on Wednesday.

A committee looking into the Palestinian president's death has asked the Swiss Radiophysics Institute, which found traces of a deadly polonium isotope on Arafat's clothing provided by his widow for a recent Al Jazeera television documentary, to examine his remains.

"We have been invited by the Palestinian National Authority and we are currently studying the most appropriate way of responding to this request," Darcy Christen, spokesman for the institute, said in an emailed reply to a Reuters question.

"Meanwhile, our main concern is to guarantee the independence, the credibility and the transparency of any involvement that we may have," Christen said.

Arafat was a guerilla-turned-statesman who came to symbolize the Palestinian quest for statehood throughout decades of war and peace with Israel.

After being stricken with an ailment which remains unknown, the president was airlifted to France in 2004 when he fell ill during an extended siege Israel mounted on his compound during a Palestinian uprising. He died shortly thereafter.

His death aroused rumors among Palestinians of an assassination, which many blamed on Israel. An investigation into the case could rekindle Palestinian hostility toward Israel and widespread suspicions that a local collaborator may have poisoned him under directions from the Jewish state.

Tawfiq Tirawi, head of the committee looking into the death, told reporters the Swiss institute was seeking assurances before sending experts to the Palestinians' administrative capital in Ramallah, but did not disclose the nature of those guarantees.

"The content of our correspondence pertained to the necessity of their arrival and our welcoming of their presence in Palestine as quickly as possible, but they have some legal issues and legal procedures," Tirawi said.

Exhuming Arafat's body from its limestone mausoleum in the center of the Palestinian Authority's presidential compound in Ramallah would be a deeply emotional move for Palestinians, but one for which the local investigative committee says the government and his family are prepared.

"We've asked for (the Swiss team's) arrival at full speed...the leadership has resolved to grant them any investigations they might request," Tirawi said.

After the Arafat documentary was aired, his widow Suha petitioned a French court to open a murder probe, claiming the circumstances of his death had been mysterious and French forensic authorities had disposed of samples taken from his body with undue haste.

Palestinian officials have called for an international investigation into the case, along the lines of the United Nations Special Tribunal for slain Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, and the Arab League has formed a special committee to advocate for a United Nations inquiry.

Nats win in 11

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:01 p.m. ET July 29, 2012

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Michael Morse hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning, then delivered a two-run double in the 11th that sent the Washington Nationals over the Milwaukee Brewers 11-10 on Sunday.

Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk from Jose Veras (3-4) in the 11th and Ryan Zimmerman singled. One out later, Morse doubled down the left-field line for an 11-9 lead.

Morse's homer with one out in the ninth off John Axford made it 9-all. The opposite-field shot barely made it over the wall in right.

The NL East-leading Nationals rallied for four runs in the eighth to tie it at 7.

The Brewers have lost nine of 10. Milwaukee's beleaguered bullpen duo of Francisco Rodriguez and Axford each allowed three runs in failing to protect another late lead.

Craig Stammen (4-1) pitched 2 1-3 hitless innings for the victory. Tyler Clippard allowed a solo home run to Corey Hart to open the bottom of the 11th, but earned his 20th save in 22 chances.

Washington reliever Ryan Mattheus gave up four runs in just 1 2-3 innings, including home runs to Rickie Weeks, Norichika Aoki and Carlos Gomez.

Milwaukee opened a 7-3 lead on Weeks' 11th home run of the year in the seventh, but Rodriguez gave up three runs in the eighth and was removed for Axford. Corey Brown then scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the dirt from Axford that went to the backstop.

Aoki and Gomez hit back to back solo home runs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Brewers a 9-7 lead.

Axford struck out Zimmerman to open the ninth. He then walked Mark DeRosa before giving up the home run to Morse, his eighth of the year.

Milwaukee starter Mark Rogers, starting in place of Zack Greinke, pitched 5 2-3 solid innings in his first major league appearance since 2010. The right-hander was the fifth pick in the June 2004 free agent draft, but had pitched only 10 innings in the majors before replacing Greinke in the Brewers' rotation.

Rogers gave up a home run to Steve Lombardozzi to lead off the game, but settled in to keep the Nationals off-balance. He gave up two runs on six hits and struck out seven.

The Brewers managed only five hits in six innings off Washington starter Gio Gonzalez, but took advantage of the All-Star's wildness. Two batters who walked and another who was hit by a pitch scored, and the Brewers also scored on a bases-loaded walk.

A play in the sixth inning resulted in three of the four umpires involved in separate arguments at the same time.

The Brewers led 3-2 and had the bases loaded with one out when Aoki laid down a squeeze bunt. Gonzalez made a quick, off-target throw to first that forced Lombardozzi to stretch into foul territory and make the catch while Milwaukee's Jonathan Lucroy easily scored from third.

First base umpire Tim Welke ruled Aoki safe, and Lombardozzi immediately began to argue while holding the ball in his glove. Seeing the argument, Cody Ransom then sprinted home. Home plate umpire Mike Estabrook, however, ruled time had been called and sent Ransom back to third.

Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke came out and argued with Estabrook that time had not been called. Washington manager Davey Johnson and Lombardozzi were arguing with Welke at first at the same time while Ransom was complaining to third base umpire Laz Diaz.

Paul Schrieber at second base was the only umpire not in an argument.

NOTES: Greinke was traded to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday and made his first start for his new team on Sunday. ... Washington 1B Adam LaRoche was removed from the game in the fourth inning due to tightness in his back. He is day to day. ... Before the game, the Brewers traded C George Kottaras to the Oakland Athletics for RHP Fautino De Los Santos. He was optioned to Triple-A Nashville. ... Aramis Ramirez was held out of Milwaukee's starting lineup to rest his sore left wrist. He pinch hit in the sixth and was intentionally walked. ... Harper returned to the lineup after missing Saturday's game with a stomach virus. ... Before the game, Washington unconditionally released OF-1B Xavier Nady.

Injured Mali leader flies home, faces challenges

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's interim president returned on Friday from weeks convalescing abroad after he was beaten up by a mob, facing pressure to form a new government and authorize a foreign military intervention against rebels in the north.

Mali needs outside support to recover from twin crises sparked by a March coup in the capital that precipitated the rebel takeover of its northern zones, occupied by Islamists dominated by al Qaeda's North African wing, AQIM.

The head of the U.S. military's Africa Command (AFRICOM) has said AQIM is the militant organization's richest faction and the dominant force in the north.

Interim President Dioncounda Traore, who spent weeks in France recovering from injuries he sustained in May when a pro-coup mob broke into his presidential palace and beat him up, flew into Bamako's main airport in the early evening.

"I'm happy to come back on the soil where I was born. My health is improving from day to day," he said in a brief statement, as soldiers and police armed with AK-47s and wearing balaklavas kept watch.

He was accompanied by his wife and children, and a Reuters witness said the scars from his injuries were still visible as he spoke to reporters on the tarmac.

"I will answer all of your questions at the appropriate time. In life one must forgive," he said before he and his family were whisked away.

Initial statements from West African leaders that a regional force would be dispatched to help Mali retake its north have shifted to focus on resolving the simmering post-coup political crisis in the capital, where the military is accused of meddling despite having official stood aside in April.

END OF MONTH DEADLINE

West Africa's ECOWAS bloc has given Mali's political leaders until the end of the month to form a new government, replacing an interim team that has failed to stabilize a nation once seen as a model of democracy in an otherwise turbulent region.

"Mali needs to re-establish broad democratic legitimacy through a unity government whose task will be to first restore security in the south and then in the north," Laurent Fabius, France's foreign minister, said on in Niamey on Friday.

Underscoring the atmosphere of perpetual instability, New York-based Human Rights Watch this week accused soldiers loyal to the coup leader of having "disappeared" at least 20 soldiers who tried to challenge his authority.

The rights group said the security forces also have engaged in a campaign of intimidation against journalists, family members of detained soldiers and others deemed a threat.

Members of the junta have not responded to the allegations.

The March 22 coup was universally condemned abroad but the reaction in cotton- and gold-producing Mali was mixed, with some praising the removal of a political class they said was corrupt.

This pro-coup camp has broadly called for interim prime minister Cheick Modibo Diarra, a former NASA astrophysicist and political novice seen close to the former junta, to remain and they remain hostile to foreign military intervention.

But the anti-coup coalition has called for his replacement and is advocating strongly for it.

According to ECOWAS planners, once stability has been restored to the institutions in the capital, regional militaries will help revamp Mali's defeated military and look at helping it retake the north, however details remain sketchy.

(AP) ? There will be monarchs, presidents, prime ministers ? and David Beckham. Friday's opening ceremony for the London Olympics is an A-list affair.

Among the 60,000 spectators at Olympic Stadium will be Queen Elizabeth II ? who as British head of state will officially open the games ? along with royals including Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry.

There's sure to be a sprinkling of showbiz royalty, too, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently filming in Britain, the most often-cited names.

The British government says more than 80 heads of state and government will be in the audience, including royalty from Brunei, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The U.S. will be represented by first lady Michelle Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will also attend.

Beckham, who helped bring the games to London and is widely rumored to have a role in the ceremony, will be there, and British newspapers have speculated that boxing great Muhammad Ali may also be involved.

The show, a 27 million pound ($42 million) spectacular titled "Isles of Wonder," will end with a performance by Paul McCartney.
